It is a belief in something that sounds like it is true but isn't. Someone trained in critical thinking in High School or college would be able to ferret out the truth better but many people are not trained to delve deep enough into what they believe to be true to ferret out any truths at all. People without critical thinking skills around the world therefore are vulnerable to certain kinds of lies.
These lies are often designed by terrorists of one kind or another and put on the internet to confuse people and to incite them to violence just like the January 6th 2021 attack on our Senators and House Members and the Vice president who were attacked by orders directly from President Trump. (who then escaped and did not lead them after inciting them even though he said he would be there with them which he wasn't).
So, it was just a lie from beginning to end. And hundreds of people might spend the rest of their lives in jail simply because they believed what Trump said that day which wasn't true.
