It's not just the threat of death to these officers and their families. It's also the possibility that many officers in the next Capitol skirmish might be crippled for life and unable to work ever again.

It's important to remember that most of these officers are above 30 to 40 years of age and so they are not young single 18 to 25 year olds for the most part like you would find in the Army in battles worldwide. They not only have to think about their own well being and futures but also the futures of all of their families ongoing.

Though many Capitol police officers may have been in battles as young single men in the Army or other armed forces of the U.S. fighting in foreign wars or police actions, right now they are mostly family men over 30 to 40 years of age who have left the military to become police officers for many years already.
