My wife and daughter watched it. I had read the book in the 1960s or 1970s when it was first written, then my son read all the whole Dune series (I made it through the first 3 and that's all I could deal with). Then I saw the original Dune movie in 1984 and I liked that one a lot too.
When I watched it I didn't know they were going to go "Lord of the Rings" or "the Hobbit" on us. So, I was surprised that it ended so quickly into the story (about the time when Paul first meets the Fremen of Arrakis himself alongside his mother. So, on one level that was disappointing because I didn't know it was going to be a 2 parter (a 3 parter if they make Dune Messiah) which is I think the 3rd book? I looked it up it actually is the 2nd book and Children of Dune is actually the 3rd book.
So, anyway, I thought it was done really well. What is interesting about it is that they chose to follow the book but to do mostly different scenes a lot that are different than the first movie made in 1984. Many people seem to hate Dune 1984 but I actually loved it. But, it likely is die hard readers of the Dune series that wanted the movie to be more like the book. However, I loved the movie. Also, I think Terminator came out in 1984 too.
