Emily Dickinson didn't want to be married because she didn't want it to interfere with her writing and thinking. Her step mother tried to marry her off but she was mostly too smart for her step mother to be married off when she didn't want to be.

It's an interesting story that likely could ONLY have taken place in either England or the U.S. or maybe Australia, Canada or New Zealand at the time because most places girls were not allowed to "THINK" much and only allowed to marry most of the time in most of the world at that time.

Now, it is much more common for women to write and think worldwide in many or most cultures worldwide.

Note: The one thing I didn't know about Emily Dickinson was that she was a Lesbian with her brother's wife before her brother married her. So, to see how lesbians sometimes fared in the 1800s is sort of interesting too because she is a real historical person in history who was a famous writer too.
