Covid-19 travel rules, mandates and safety guidance state by state

(CNN) — US domestic travel restrictions instituted in the early months of the Covid-19 pandemic have been nearly eliminated for trips within and between states and territories. That doesn't mean the pandemic's effects are over yet.

There are still local and state mandates on masks, Covid tests and vaccines to consider. And the state of Hawaii and commonwealth of Puerto Rico still have testing requirements to enter.

The US Centers of Disease Control and Prevention suggests delaying travel until you are up to date with your Covid vaccines.

For people not making road trips, the CDC reminds people that wearing a mask over your nose and mouth is required when in indoor areas of public transportation.

If you do decide to travel to another US state or territory, you should still check out the latest guidance before you go, even if you're fully vaccinated.

Their official websites have important Covid-19 safety information you still need to know and rules you'll be expected to follow.

This list is alphabetical and includes links to state websites to help you get started:

Alabama

The U.S. Space & Rocket Center is open in Huntsville, Alabama. Face masks are required inside buildings and on simulators for anyone 3 and older, regardless of vaccination status. You should always check with your travel venues before you go about their rules so you're not caught by surprise.

Alaska

There are no statewide travel restrictions in Alaska. Pre-travel testing isn't required, but it's highly encouraged and free at participating airports. All travelers to Alaska can get a free Covid-19 vaccine at participating airports. Check here for updates and safety guidance.

Arizona

Arkansas

There are no statewide travel restrictions in Arkansas. Check here for updates and safety guidance.

California

There are no statewide travel restrictions in California. Large indoor events (more than 1,000 require proof of vaccination or negative Covid test result.

Colorado

Hawaii

Hawaii has the strictest entry requirements of any US state. People who aren't fully vaccinated still need a negative Covid-19 test result to bypass a mandatory quarantine. Check here for updates and safety guidance.

Illinois

Kansas

While mostly open, Kansas has had some rather specific quarantine requirements based on previous travel destinations and when you went there, sometimes including domestic locations. They are subject to frequent change. Check here for updates and more details.

Kentucky

Louisiana

Maine

New Hampshire

Domestic visitors to New Hampshire no longer need to quarantine or take a Covid-19 test to travel to New Hampshire, but it is still recommended to get tested three to five days after arrival. However, people who have had traveled internationally within 10 days of arriving in New Hampshire or have been on a cruise ship do need to follow testing and quarantine protocols unless they meet certain exceptions. New Jersey

New Mexico

New York

New York City's subway system is in full operation. Masks are still required in indoor stations and on trains.

Pennsylvania

Puerto Rico

Until February 1, all passengers arriving on domestic flights must show a negative Covid-19 test (either antigen or PCR) result taken within 48 hours before arrival time, regardless of vaccination status. Passengers arriving without a test will have 48 hours to take one upon arrival or be subject to a fine. Unvaccinated travelers must quarantine for seven days after arriving, regardless of whether they have a negative test result.

Starting February 2, vaccinated travelers will no longer be required to present a negative test. Unvaccinated travelers entering on domestic flights will still be required to show negative test results from the past two days or take one within 48 hours of arrival and must quarantine while awaiting results.
