Why did this happen?

It happened because all you need is one person in ANY religion to be fanatical and fundamentalist enough to believe that if they obtain nuclear weapons they can blow up the world and end it.

Why would anyone do this?

From their point of view they would do this because not everyone believes the way they do. So, in their twisted thinking they would sacrifice everyone on earth and all life on earth as well the earth itself to rid the earth permanently of anyone who doesn't believe just like them.

Therefore, when nuclear weapons were invented this made all religion obsolete unless we want the earth to become a 2nd asteroid belt here in the Solar system.

The first asteroid belt was created by the nuking of the planet Maldek out past Mars by nuclear weapons set off by our ancestors by the way. We are relatives of those who survived the nuking of Maldek which also blew off most of the atmosphere on Mars which caused many of them who survived this to come to Earth too.
