How do you separate dreams from reality?

All dreams are a part of reality. However, sometimes what you are working through in dreams might not make any sense to you at all in how it relates to the physical world. Also, dreams can have something to do with your subconscious mind as well as the organs in your body. So, your mind is processing literally what is going on in all the cells of your body through your dreams.

However, it is also processing all beings (Spirit, Human and animal or even bird) around you or who will come into your life or surroundings in some way too.

The problem is that when you are dreaming you often only remember what you were dreaming when you suddenly wake up. This then has to do with something that might be important if the dream startles you enough to actually wake you up.

When a dream wakes you up suddenly it might be important to think about what is happening in the dream or to write it down or to make a digital recording of your voice on your phone or something before you lose the memory of it. Since the dream  lives in the dream world it isn't going to stay usually in your conscious memory unless you make some record of it.

However, freaking out about all this doesn't help. It's usually better to be taking all these things in stride in life so you can take notice of the things as they come up one by one. However, if a dream wakes you up often you want to record yourself talking about it or even writing about it if you can get it down fast enough.
