I guess I thought being a lay minister was something different than this all these years

What I thought being a lay minister was was someone whose profession wasn't a minister that they made money with. So, this was something they did in addition to working during the week at another job. So, I saw it as a volunteer position something that they might be paid for but it would be like a weekend job if they weren't just volunteers. My parents were in charge of a church in Los Angeles from 1954 until 1960 but they also had other jobs (Dad full time and Mom Part time) during this time in our lives. So, a lay minister is usually not ordained and didn't go to college to become a minister full time and is usually a volunteer even if they are given nominal monies (but usually not enough to live on more than maybe buying a meal or two during any given week.)
Whereas an ordained minister is paid by their church or parish and likely doesn't have other financial means supporting them.
begin quote:
Lay ministry is a term used for ministers of faiths in Christian denominations who are not ordained in their faith tradition. Lay ministers are people who are elected by the church, full-time or part-time.
