I have never been bitten by a rattlesnake in California but they are everywhere so watch out for them
They are a polite lethal animal, this snake. So, as long as you have good hearing when you are in the wilds and use it then likely you can survive them.
My closest call with getting bit was about 25 years ago when I was camping in the Klamath Knot near a river in the wilderness there with my wife and then baby youngest daughter. I had wanted to move away from the campsite to visit the river nearby. This took me through a grove of Pine and Fir Trees. As I was walking along in shorts with a t-shirt and Teva open toed sandals because it was very hot and summer time I heard the sound ahead of me. So, I stopped looking for the rattlesnake. It was a diamondback and I was in open toed sandals with shorts which is not what you want to have on when you hear a rattlesnake rattling at you. Luckily, I had stopped in time before I had stepped on it and gotten bitten. I gingerly walked backwards away from it and back towards my campsite to my wife and baby daughter. I didn't go to the river after all simply because when there is one rattlesnake usually there are more nearby because they live usually in family areas (families of rattlesnakes). If you have ever seen True Grit(2010) the one with Hailee Steinfeld in it you can see for yourselves how many of the same family often live together like that for protection. So, it's good to remember that where you see one often there are many others nearby. This helps keep you and your family and friends alive while camping in the wilderness.
