In my era where I came of age hugging was important to everyone
In the past in the 1960s, hugging everyone at a party was expected among the California Cosmics that I hung out with in College and climbing mountains and dated etc. So, often if I went to a party of college age people it was necessary to hug everyone there even if there were 100 or more people. Some people you wanted to hug because they were wonderful and desirable but others might not have had showers lately or had recently had sex but hadn't showered and that was sort of smelly and onerous to deal with. So, it was a mixed experience if you followed the mores and rules of acceptable college age behavior in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
And my old friends from this era I continued to hug whenever I saw them until Covid when we all had to stop. I continued to hug my wife and children regularly because this is a very bonding experience in a positive way for everyone. So, reading the last article I cannot really imagine going a year or two without hugging someone. I"m not sure at least at this point in my life that I could survive this very well. I suppose I am stoic enough to keep going no matter what like a soldier through anything but I wouldn't be someone at that point that would be who I am now.
I would become more like a biological robot ongoing after a few years of life like that. What comes to mind is who Tom Hanks became after 4 years alone in Castaway:
