For example, it could be a 9mm pistol that fires very rapidly or a 30/30 rifle that fires rapidly. So, it isn't the caliber of the gun or even if the gun is an AR-15 or Kalashnikov, it is about being over about the caliber of a .38 pistol and being a quick firing semi-automatic or automatic weapon. From this point of view any quick firing 9mm pistol or quick firing .45 semiautomatic pistol could be considered to be an Assault Weapon. Now remember an assault weapon isn't necessarily an Assault Rifle. So, I found learning all this kind of confusing more than anything else. Also, the 7 states that have outlawed Assault weapons likely have different rules than each other in regard to what an assault weapon is too in their laws.
However, I'm not sure any revolver pistol would be considered an assault weapon because they are usually slower to fire even if they are double action revolver pistols. (a double action revolver simply means that you can cock it and fire or you can also just pull the trigger which is usually pretty stiff without cocking and not very accurate when you fire without cocking the hammer first.
