Why do people live along the California coast?
Because first of all, it's cooler here. It doesn't freeze mostly at all along the coast in the winter time. But, there could be exceptions for places like Eureka and Arcata up near the Oregon Border.
Second the Pacific Ocean is about 6000 miles across. So, whatever temperature it is on average is going to cool or warm (depending upon the time of year) that land next to the Pacific Ocean.
Third, Because the prevailing winds are west to east it means that the air is cleaned all the way from China and Japan to the U.S. and Canadian coasts which makes the air some of the cleanest air coming on shore in California or Canada or Mexico or central or South America as among the clearest cleanest air on earth. Even if there are fires the wind tends to blow east and not west except during certain times of the year and this only lasts at most a few days at a time. So, you have some of the cleanest air on earth coming off the Pacific ocean cleaned by winds and rain and dust particles falling into the ocean between China and the U.S. mostly.
Also, Here are some temperatures this week starting in San Diego and working north:
So, as you can see even in late July like now the weather is still pretty good along the California Coast from San Diego all the way north to Eureka, California.
