19-year-old student killed, 2 hurt after column collapses at Lewis & Clark College in Oregon

A 19-year-old student at a college in Portland, Oregon, was killed and two were injured after a brick column collapsed on the first day of a new fall semester, authorities said.

Fire crews arrived at Lewis & Clark College, a private liberal arts college of about 2,000 students, around 8 p.m. Monday after receiving reports that multiple people were injured, Portland Fire & Rescue Bureau said in a statement.

Witnesses told police that one person was seriously injured and that people were performing CPR on him after a masonry column fell toward six people in three hammocks.

First responders confirmed no one was pinned beneath the column and found that one 19-year-old man had died at the scene. Lewis & Clark did not confirm a cause for the collapse.

Two 18-year-old women were also hurt, Portland Fire & Rescue said. One had injuries to one arm and the other suffered abdominal injuries. Both were taken to a hospital, and their conditions were unknown, the bureau said.

Lewis & Clark College confirmed in a statement that one student was killed and two were injured and said the college was working to contact the students' families after the "tragic accident."

"We are deeply saddened by the shocking loss of a member of our community," the college said.
