My 1974 Scout II was a 6 cylinder model which if I had had a winch on it I likely could have raised the vehicle up some trees even if I wanted to. It could literally go anywhere. I was driving through 2 to 3 feet of unplowed snow out in the boonies of the mt. Shasta area and realized right then that if I got this thing stuck I wouldn't get it out for up to 6 months because it snowed a lot there then in the 1980s. So, since I needed the vehicle for my family and business I realized I should just drive home to my 2 1/2 acres in the snow and call it a day.
I had only 2 complaints about this vehicle. The first was the clutch blew my wife's knee out in a traffic jam so I had to drive us out of there one day and rust. Though it's a great vehicle eventually rust became a problem that I didn't ever completely solve. I finally gave it to my step son and he sold it to people who wanted to drive it into Mexico over dirt roads a lot which it was really good at. Once I blew out the U joint in the back and just drove it on the front two wheels in 4 wheel drive for a while while I waited for the new U joint part to arrive. The only problem was when I turned sharp it would cause the car to jump some because of the 4 wheel drive trying to steer and be in 4 wheel drive on a paved road at the time. Very tough car and mostly indestructible mechanically. Really amazing vehicle in most ways.
