The road is now paved up the west side all the way to Wailuku if you want to drive that way from Lahaina side: But!
But, there are long sections where it is a one way road because it was an engineering feat to put in the road in the first place many places. So, if you drive this road on a busy day (in both directions) you might regret it because it could become a nightmare for miles of one lane road and backing up and screaming drivers. We sort of lucked out to go on a rainy day so had no trouble at all.
So, that is what I would recommend to do this drive (either direction). Wait for a rainy day that ISN"T a Friday, Saturday or a Sunday to do this drive. Go when you see the rain clouds and hopefully no one else wants to drive this road that day either.
Because of this we had a wonderful trip over the one lane road (that is paved all the way around the north and eastern tip of Maui all the way to Wailuku and beyond.
Then we drove through Wailuku then Kahului and on towards Haiku and almost to Hana. We also visited friends in Haiku and a little further at Twin Falls Forest preserve (not sure actual name) might be what I said.
I think this is it: (not sure whether this is the rainforest preserve or just a hike downriver of the preserve).
The preserve I believe is to the west of the main road upland and up river.
