One one level "Religion is the opiate of the people" is true. But, having NO belief system is also fatal in it's own way too.
So, I tend to see all this like the Greeks did which is "Moderation in all things". People who are extremists tend to die of their extreme views (or go crazy from them).
It's one reason why I also like the "Middle Way" or Lam Rim of Buddhism simply because it equates to sort of the Greek Philosophy of "Moderation in all things".
You have to see atheism as an extreme point of view which is often fatal to people around the world in times of stress or ill health.
For example, many times I have felt I was going to die in the moment from one ailment or another during my life but when I asked the angels if I was going to die they always said, "NO. This is only temporary!"
And they were always right!
But, what about people who don't believe in angels or God or a higher power or anything?
Will they survive these points in their lives too?
Maybe not.
Which is why believing in something in life is important even if that something is yourself or your mate or your best friend or you mother or father.
If you don't believe in anything at all, how will you survive when things get really rough in your life?
Believing in something gets us through the hard times when often nothing else does.
