I read Alas, Babylon when I was 12 to 14 years old and it scared the hell out of me because I saw this coming then

We grew up faster then in the early 1960s I was 12 in 1960 and 14 in 1962 and the Cuban missile Crisis happened around then too when many freaked out. My father told me we would be okay but I witnessed one of the Dupont Heiresses shaking while loading up her car for a cabin in the Sierras to survive a nuclear holocaust. My father said: "We are going to be okay, Freddie. Nothing is going to happen."

But, I wasn't as sure as he was about all this (or at least what he told me to keep me calm and okay then).
