I have found myself as I grew up being very cynical at times, especially through my teens and early 20s. However, I found it less and less useful as I grew older. Why?
Because if you are not using positive thinking you don't live very long.
When I met my present wife I think you might have called her a "Polyanna" in her thinking because she was always so very optimistic. She had won scholarship awards from Governor Reagan in High School as well so she was always very much an "Overachiever" in her life. I find that now I'm very useful to her in that "I calm her down" a lot because being an overachiever throughout ones life tends to wear a person out too.
So, because I'm a much calmer and contemplative person and she is more of an overacheiver and very social and loves people we tend to be a good combination. In some ways we are opposites. And you know how sometimes opposites attract.
However, it's important to say here that without her optimism and encouragement I likely would have died at around age 50 without her there by my side.
Without her or someone like her I likely would have died in 1998 or 1999 then when I got a heart virus and was forced to retire at age 50.
The point being that "People don't live very long if they are not optimistic about their future!"
And though I can always calm my wife down when she gets too hyper I also needed someone to be positive all the time too so I could stay alive through anything in life too. By the time I met her when I was around 45 years old I had been through a lot and already married twice in my life.
But, luckily, third time is the charm since 1995 when we married in Yosemite National Park.
