Basically, since everything electrical stops working between 100 miles up all the way to the ground over an area the size of Europe or the 48 States of the U.S. Mainland, they all crash.
Why do they crash?
Because there are no wires connecting the controls to the pilot and to all movable surfaces it is all electronic assist now in planes because the distances are too great to have control wires work on control surfaces now all the way from the pilots in the cockpit to the control surfaces. So, the planes with electrical assist would all crash because the pilots controls would not work and the automatic pilot would not work either and the wheels couldn't be put down either.
Also, all electric vehicles on the ground would lose control too unless they had mechanical connections to their steering. So, in a gas or diesel car you likely could brake and steer okay even though your engines would all die because everything electrical in them would stop working. I'm not sure how to talk about diesel engines because they are based upon compression and not a spark plug. But everything electrical in every diesel engine in a place like the lower 48 in the U.S. or all of Europe wouldn't work anymore after a 100 megaton hydrogen bomb went off at 100 miles up above the U.S. or Europe.
But, small planes with wire controls connecting the controls to all movable surfaces could theoretically glide down and land somewhere but even their engines wouldn't work anymore because all electrical things would have melted down.
Also, I didn't think about this before but I'm not sure the Faraday Cage would prevent harm to the passengers in any plane or not because it is metal too. So, I'm not sure whether or not everyone would electrically fry from the Electromagnetic pulse or not being that close to something metal even if it is aluminum or titanium in most planes.
So, there are many unknowns because something like this on earth hasn't happened yet as far as I know presently know on this timeline.
So, mechanical things not electrical might still work like control surfaces on planes that have wires to the control surfaces and mechanical steering in cars and mechanical things like brakes because of brake fluid might work too to save lives on the ground.
A car and a plane are metal Faraday cages which sometimes (not all the time) protect passengers and drivers or pilots from serious harm from things like lightning strikes. So, it is unknown until a EMP event happens at least to me what actually happens in many cases I'm writing about.
So, the estimation of about 1/3 to 1/2 of the people in the affected area likely dying would be a good estimate if this actually happened.
When think tanks went over these issues in the 1950s and 1960s this is mostly what they thought about this eventuality here on earth in the U.S., Europe, Russia or China or elsewhere on earth.
The advantage to an enemy theoretically would be that the buildings wouldn't be destroyed just the people and the electrical technology of the affected country or countries.
My writing about all this is to prevent it happening. Because ignorance of this kind of thing isn't what keeps us alive here on earth and keeps our people alive.
The more people know about things like this the more people will be motivated to prevent something like this from happening.
Why would up to 1/3 to 1/2 of all people on the ground below the EMP die?
Because being within about 10 to 12 feet of anything metal would be fatal. But, the bigger the metal item the more likely it would be fatal to be near it.
However, like I said before every car and plane is a metal Faraday cage and would protect the occupants theoretically in that sense to some degree. But, if someone was getting out of a car or standing within 10 or 12 feet of a car it likely would be fatal from the EMP from the explosion 100 miles into space.
So, once again I'm writing this so it doesn't happen in the next 10 years or so caused by someone like Putin or Xi.
