This is what I found interesting in this article at Wikipedia on the Soviet war in Afghanistan (late 1980s until 1989). How this happened is that Osama Bin Laden was a CIA agent in Afghanistan and became a national Hero at this time among the Mujahadeen Afghanistanis because Shoulder fired Stinger Missiles were funneled through him and other CIA agents which destroyed Russian Tanks and planes and ended the war and bankrupted the Soviet Union at that time. It is also interesting that this war is sometimes called "The Bear Trap" because the symbol of Russia is the Bear. However, it is strange to me that the U.S. also got bogged down in a 20 year war against the Taliban too, especially after this happened already to the Soviets for 10 years and it bankrupted the Soviet Union losing all those tanks and planes and helicopters and soldiers. So, the consequences of stinger missiles being given to the Taliban caused through Osama Bin Laden 9-11. The reason the U.S. eventually shot him was he was a turncoat CIA agent and so he was eliminated because he knew too much and this information would be embarrassing for the U.S. Government and so he was eliminated before he could say anything to anyone in the media about all this.

Due to the length of the Soviet–Afghan War, it has sometimes been referred to as the "Soviet Union's Vietnam War" or as the "Bear Trap" by sources from the Western world.[85][86][87] It has left a mixed legacy in the post-Soviet countries as well as in Afghanistan.[67] Additionally, American support for the mujahideen in Afghanistan during the conflict is thought to have contributed to a "blowback" of unintended consequences against American interests (e.g., the September 11 attacks), which ultimately led to the United States' War in Afghanistan from 2001 until 2021. The war also had lasting impacts in Pakistan.[88]
