The Diplomat Season 2: Everything We Know
Move over, The Night Agent—there's a new political drama in town.
Move over The Night Agent—Netflix has another political drama on the rise. If you haven’t heard, The Diplomat has fully taken over the streaming platform. Since its premiere on April 2, the new series has held a steady spot on Netflix’s Top 10 list. Haven't seen it yet? Here's a quick rundown.
The Diplomat follows Kate Wyler (Keri Russell), a woman who is hired as an ambassador to the United Kingdom amid an international crisis. As if juggling her career isn’t hard enough, she is also fighting to save her marriage to her husband, Hal (Rufus Sewell), a former political star. After a stunning eight episodes, Season One ended with a chilling cliffhanger. (Which, of course, we won't spoil here.) Netflix has kept quiet about the future of the show, but The Diplomat's showrunner, Deborah Cahn, is clearly excited to plan the next chapter.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter’s TVs Top 5 Podcast, Cahn expressed her hope for a second season. “I certainly like long-form stories,” she said. “I like being able to write about minutiae and the little odd moments of people’s lives and their worlds. So I like long-form storytelling. I certainly hope it continues. And I have a lot of ideas about where it would go. But we’ll see. We shall see what happens.”
Well, well, well—that certainly sounds promising. Keep reading for everything we know about The Diplomat Season Two.
Has The Diplomat Been Renewed For a Second Season?
Unfortunately, not yet. But never say never! Given the show’s success, it’s likely that Netflix will order another season of the political drama. If the streamer follows the same timeline as The Night Agent, which was renewed just a week after its premiere, we should hear an update about The Diplomat very soon.
When Could Season Two of The Diplomat Release?
If The Diplomat is renewed for a second season, it may be available to stream sooner than you think. According to Marie Claire, The Diplomat was
originally announced in January 2022. Netflix released the series 15
months later, so if production runs smoothly, Season Two could be ready
by next summer.
What Might Happen in Season Two of The Diplomat?
After that explosive cliffhanger, The Diplomat could go in a number of ways. We won’t spoil what happened for those who haven't watched the show, but in an interview with Netflix’s Tudum, Sewell gave his prediction for the next chapter. “All I know is that if you resolve it one way or another too quickly, we’re screwed,” he said. “I like to think there are enough problems to last us [a few seasons]. Who knows? I would like someone with a better imagination than mine to take over on that rather than follow my dumb suggestions.”
We’ll continue to update this story as more information becomes available.
