The first surprising thing is that so much snow came down this winter and spring and the temperatures have remained (like most places in California) 10 to 20 degrees below normal which reminds me of when Mt. St. Helens went off in the early 1980s in March 27th 1980. I was just buying 2 1/2 acres and as I built my house I noticed that summer and fall for 2 years time purple and green sunsets from all the dust in the air circling the globe then but also we had really cold summers for around 2 years also in addition to the purple and green and orange and blue sunsets from all the dust in the air circling the globe then from the eruption.
So, for example, you go up to Bunny Flat and there is snow right there at Bunny Flat still that goes from there all the way up to the top of Mt. Shasta basically which is unusual in any year but especially since around 2000 AD. But, this sort of thing happened more regularly (but not every year) in the 1970s and 1980s where snow was still there in places like Bunny Flat in May or June at 6900 feet on Mt. Shasta.
Also, when I drove my 4 wheel drive truck up to Castle Lake and tried to walk around the trail to the Fish laboratory run by a university summers usually. You couldn't really use the trail without climbing up on top of 7 to 8 feet snow drifts. Since I was wearing Crocs at the time this was no easy feat doing this. YOU also likely had to ford ice cold ponds of melting snow too to move along on the trail around to where the Fish lab is. Likely it isn't being used this year because of the cold and unusual weather either.
So, the biggest difference this year is that snow you might have seen previous years in April you are still seeing in place in June this weekend the 17th and 18th of 2023
