It's better for most people to rent a car on whatever island or islands you visit simply because public transportation either doesn't exist (except for Taxis) many places or unless you want to fly somewhere with a helicopter or plane inter-island or whatever. So, many people want to rent a car. Also, for me, the Hawaiian islands are still one of the best places to snorkel or SCUBA dive on earth in many places. Some people just go to a resort and sit out on their veranda and enjoy the tropical plants and light sea breezes on Palm Trees almost any time of the year. For example, I'm on my own veranda at a hotel and it's about 8 AM here (11 AM in California) and blogging right now while watching palm tress lightly blow in a light wind. It says it's supposed to be 89 degrees here today which is pretty hot for a humid climate so many people likely are going to hit the beach and snorkel or boogie board here too. There are plants all around like Hawaiian Ginger and others of a tropical nature.
My wife likes Kauai a lot because it is the "Garden Isle" and gets the most rain. It also tends to be the coolest of the islands with the big Island of Hawaii always being the Hottest. This is simply because the big island is the furthest south and Kauai is the furthest north. Here is the temperature of Hilo this week as it is the furthest south of the cities on the big Island far to the south of Kauai.
What is amazing this week is that for some reason Hilo is cooler than most of Kauai this week. Not sure why?
Just remember that islands like Maui and the big Island of Hawaii go up to 10,000 feet on Maui and over 14,000 feet on the big Island of Hawaii so there are many different temperature ranges if you want if you don't just want to be along the beaches.
