A friend of mine talked to me about how one of the bases had been nuclear powered since likely the 1960s or 1970s. However, eventually they just buried the radiated parts in the snow eventually thinking that might protect Navy personnel but it didn't. This friend said that almost every person working there over a couple of months died early of some form of radiation exposure from that AntArctica Naval base. I cannot remember the base name but it might have been McMurdo.
I looked at pictures of McMurdo station from Google images and it appears that the ice and snow mostly melts out now which is interesting too in global Climate changes if this was the place. So, McMurdo is on land sometimes covered with snow and ice I guess.
