Californians usually aren't very afraid of earthquakes but terrified of fires. Why?

Because the last really big quake that harmed a lot of people was the 1994 Quake in Northridge from my point of view which basically knocked down every chimney in Northridge California. A friend of mine had to go there and rebuild his mother's chimney so this is why I know this. But, this was 26 years ago and fires can happen almost any day of the year here in California.

And dying by fire is a really painful ad screaming way to die usually if you are conscious when your body starts burning up.

The problem with fires is you never know when one is going to start which is also the same problem with earthquakes. But, earthquakes that could kill you don't happen very often. Like the 4.9 quake today probably scared a whole lot of people in Barstow, California but I doubt anyone died but people can be injured in a quake this size by flying glass or breaking glass sometimes too.

For example, a 5.0 earthquake when my now grown daughter was 5 in Orange County was one of the scariest experiences of my life because my daughter was in the middle of a swimming pool when the quake happened. So, I ran outside and she was floating on an inflatable toy and I told her to swim into the center of the pool so she wouldn't be knocked out by the cement at the edge of the pool. Also, water was splashing out of the pool a lot like 1 to 2 feet of water was sloshing this way and that over and over again. But, finally it settled down. So, even just a 5.0 can be terrifying for a parent like this one was for me in trying to protect my daughter from harm.
