Because I have size 15 shoes and size 17 in Crocs because they don't have width sizes. So, I usually slip off my Crocs if I'm wearing them and drive barefoot because with feet this big it's much much safer for me to drive without shoes on. However, I don't find it very useful to drive only with socks because sometimes your feet slip off the pedals but usually for me at least barefoot is much better for me than any shoes. But, once again this doesn't work if it's snowing outside usually and Crocs don't do that well in the snow anyway.
Note: IF you were wondering why driving barefoot is legal in California it's because of thongs (beach walkers because the straps used to get caught in the gas pedal or brake and people would die. So, as a result of all the sandal wearers year around at the southern California coast they made driving Barefoot legal before or around the time I got my driver's license around 1964. I also bought my first car that year which was a 1956 Ford Station wagon for 800 dollars. (Cars cost a whole lot less then) I think then in 1964 you could buy a brand new VW Bug for 800 to 1000 dollars in 1964.
