Liberty ships of WWII from Google AI and other website links

I thought before doing this research that Liberty ships were mostly used in the Pacific but apparently they were used more in the Atlantic Theater of the war. The ones my Father and Uncle helped build in Seattle must have gone through the Panama Canal to be in the Atlantic Ocean? Not sure.

Liberty ships were a class of mass-produced, utilitarian cargo ships built in the United States during World War II to transport troops, supplies, and equipment across the Atlantic, playing a crucial role in the Allied war effort.
Here's a more detailed explanation:
  • Purpose:
These ships were designed to be built quickly and efficiently to meet the urgent need for cargo transport during the war.
  • Design:
They were relatively simple, sturdy, and capable of carrying large amounts of cargo.

  • Significance:
The Liberty ships were essential in transporting troops, supplies, and equipment across the Atlantic, helping to sustain military operations and turn the tide in the Battle of the Atlantic.

  • Production:
Between 1941 and 1945, an astounding 2,710 of these ships were built.

  • Characteristics:
    • Length: 441 feet, 6 inches

  • Beam: 57 feet

  • Speed: Capable of cruising at 11 knots

  • Armament: Some were armed with guns for self-defense.

  • Later Ships:
As the war progressed, a new line of ships, named Victory ships, were built, which were bigger, faster, and had better engines than the Liberty ships.

    Export
Liberty ships were cargo ships built in the United States during World War II. Eighteen American shipyards built 2751 Liberties between 1941 and 1945. They were British in conception but adapted by the United States, cheap and quick to build. The ships were used primarily for carrying troops.
