We are in unknown territory now. Iran hasn't been in this territory since the 8 years war with Iraq under Saddam Hussein

That was from 1980 to 1988 and the U.S. government aided Iraq but didn't want either side to win. So, whenever Iraq was winning we would cut off weapons to them so they couldn't win. Also, Iraq used poison gas against the Iranians with truly awful effects then too. Here is more about it from Google AI:

 begin quotes:
During the Iran-Iraq war, Iraq employed chemical weapons, primarily against Iranian forces and civilians. The most significant weapons were mustard gas, and nerve agents Tabun and Sarin. Iraq also reportedly used other chemical weapons, including vomiting agents, and there were reports of cyanide poisoning in some attacks.
Here's a more detailed breakdown:
  • Mustard Gas:
This blistering agent was widely used by Iraq, causing severe skin, respiratory, and eye damage.

The Iraqi chemical attacks were extensive, with reports indicating the use of thousands of chemical bombs, artillery shells, and rockets. The war included numerous documented chemical attacks, particularly after 1984, including the infamous Halabja attack.
