I wrote this question because a relative of mine and her daughter were trying to fly into Santa Barbara Airport from the East Coast to visit me and the rest of my family in California. However, after having to get up at 2 am early Tuesday morning (pacific Time) she was supposed to arrive around 1 pm in Santa Barbara. But, because of no radios working there in the control tower all commercial Traffic was likely diverted to Los Angeles or LAX or other working airports. So, thousands of people's lives were affected by this in various ways. So, she and her daughter didn't get into Santa Barbara (with her luggage) until 8:30pm and even then they almost wouldn't give her her luggage and she was going to have to pick it up (whenever the Airport functioned as a commercial landing and takeoff place again. So, finally around 5 pm they released her luggage to her and she finally got a shuttle bus to Santa Barbara and arrived about 8:30 PM Pacific time and I picked her up at the shuttle there. So, this is why I asked this question:
what airports were shut down because of no working radios today in the U.S.?
The Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA) National Airspace System (NAS) Status shows an airport closure for
CKB (Clarksburg, West Virginia) from 22/4:05 PM PDT to 23/2:30 AM PDT, with it being closed except for HLP (presumably meaning helicopters). However, the reason given in the NAS status for the CKB closure isn't explicitly stated as a radio issue in the given text.
In addition, San Luis Obispo County Airport (SLO)
temporarily suspended flights on July 22nd, 2025, due to a "complete
power and communications outage at the Santa Barbara Air Traffic Control
Tower and Terminal Radar Approach Control (TRACON)". This outage was
attributed to a severed fiber cable, according to The Santa Barbara Independent. SLO has since resumed flight operations.
While
other airports have experienced issues with radio communication and air
traffic control recently, the information available on July 23rd, 2025,
specifically mentions Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) having
faced recurring radio outages and air traffic control difficulties,
according to Insider News. However, it's unclear from the provided text
whether it was completely shut down today due to radio problems.
Important Note: The FAA's website is the best source for up-to-the-minute information on airport status and closures.
