Not a good time to go to Mt. Shasta Area: Root Fire is 10 miles from Dunsmuir in Castle Crags area. started Monday today

This is what I have to say if you are in the area having lived here a lot from 1976 to 1992.

I wouldn't trust Interstate 5 to stay open under these conditions very long. It might stay open if the fire goes another direction.

However, winds go up canyons in the day time generally and then at night they go down canyons and the winds if they do this could bring this fire right into Dunsmuir tonight when Airplanes and helicopters can't make drops because it's night time in the mountains. I suppose if there were some amazing pilots with Night vision Goggles they might if they were allowed to do this but this would be pretty dangerous unless you were in a wartime situation with actual soldiers involved.

A friend of mine who owns a home in the Mt. Shasta area called me to tell me about it. I looked out the window because I was doing something else and saw to my horror the mountain and the incredible amount of smoke above 10,000 feet presently heading towards and beyond Mt. Shasta. Will the fire come here to the city of Mt. Shasta UNKNOWN at present. Will it burn through Castle Crags state Park and through Heart Lake and Castle Lake and Lake Siskiyou areas? UNKNOWN at present. Will it burn down people's homes in the City of Mt. Shasta? I hope not but given all present variables this also could be possible especially because of the time of day it started and the fact that the winds at altitude are presently blowing East North East apparently. But, you know how winds are they might change on a dime.

The problem is it is now almost 6pm and if they don't have it out by sundown this could really get much more serious by the minute regarding lives and property and beautiful pristine Alpine places and lakes.

Why? Because as far as I presently know they aren't allowed to fly planes or helicopters into this fire at night. This has been a general rule all over California that you aren't allow to bomb fires at night with water or fire retardant.
