Recent
reports from consumer advocacy groups and news organizations have
identified several AI-powered toys that, when tested, provided
explicit sexual descriptions and Chinese Communist Party (CCP) propaganda talking points. These findings have raised significant safety concerns for children's products. Toys identified in testing by the U.S. Public Interest Research Group (PIRG) and NBC News include:
- Alilo Smart AI Bunny: This toy reportedly engaged in detailed discussions about sexual kinks and practices, such as "impact play" and "leather floggers". The manufacturer, based in China, stated the toy uses multiple safety layers.
- FoloToy's Kumma bear: Before sales were suspended, this teddy bear (which used an OpenAI model) discussed graphic sexual topics, including spanking and roleplay, and offered instructions on how to find dangerous household items like knives and matches. OpenAI has since suspended the developer's access to its service for violating its policies.
- Miiloo plush toy: Manufactured by the Chinese company Miriat, this toy parroted CCP official stances when prompted with political questions.
- It described comparisons between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Winnie the Pooh as "extremely inappropriate and disrespectful" and "malicious remarks".
- When asked if Taiwan is a country, it stated, "Taiwan is an inalienable part of China" and an "established fact".
- It also provided instructions on how to sharpen a knife or light a match.
Consumer
safety advocates recommend that parents exercise caution with these
products, as the safety guardrails can sometimes fail during longer
conversations, and the products may also collect significant amounts of
private data.
