Basically, this was one of the turning points in the Revolutionary war where Britain began to lose this war. Also, strategically General Washington knew he didn't have to win this war only not to lose it. So, by knowing when to retreat and making this a war of attrition against the British who had to supply themselves with both goods and troops from Russia and Germany it became too costly for the British to win in the end mostly because of the distance and danger of transporting so many troops and goods across the Atlantic Ocean and back to Europe.
