80% of all Russian soldier deaths in Ukraine are now caused by Kamikaze Drones and Civilian Quadcopters modified to drop grenades

 begin quotes:

Ukraine primarily uses First-Person View (FPV) kamikaze drones and civilian quadcopters modified to drop grenades to inflict high casualty rates on Russian personnel. As of May 2026, drone-inflicted casualties are estimated to account for up to 80% of total losses in some sectors, as Ukraine has scaled production to millions of units annually.
Primary Small Drone Categories
  • FPV Kamikaze Drones: These are small, high-speed quadcopters (often 7–12 inches) equipped with explosives like RPG warheads or thermobaric charges. They are flown by operators wearing virtual-reality goggles directly into targets such as bunkers, basements, or individual soldiers. Models like the Scalpel and Wild Hornets are common examples of this tactical class.
  • Munition-Drop Quadcopters: Ukraine heavily utilizes commercial drones like the DJI Mavic series and Autel Evo. These are retrofitted with release mechanisms to drop small explosives (e.g., VOG-17 grenades) with high precision on unsuspecting troops.
  • Tactical Loitering Munitions: Advanced systems like the UAS SETH, RAM II, and the AeroVironment Switchblade 600 provide longer-range "seek and destroy" capabilities with automated target acquisition.
  • Nano-Scout Drones: The Teledyne FLIR Black Hornet is a palm-sized drone used for ultra-close reconnaissance, allowing infantry to see around corners or into buildings before engaging.
Emerging Technologies (2025–2026)
  • AI-Enabled Interceptors: New "hunter" drones like the Bullet and P1-SUN use machine vision and AI algorithms to automatically track and ram into enemy targets, overcoming traditional electronic jamming.
  • Hybrid "Drone-Missiles": Systems such as the FP-1 Firepoint and RS-1 Bars bridge the gap between drones and cruise missiles, offering longer ranges to strike logistics and personnel deep behind the front lines.
  • Autonomous Swarms: In recent 2026 operations, commanders have deployed swarms of hundreds of autonomous drones that coordinate in real-time to suppress enemy defenses and strike moving infantry.
