Jimmy Stewart was a B-24 Bomber pilot who flew 20 combat missions in World War II

 begin quote:

Yes, legendary actor Jimmy Stewart was a highly accomplished pilot and a distinguished military officer. He was a commercial pilot before World War II, became a B-24 bomber pilot/commander in the US Army Air Forces, flew 20 combat missions, and retired as a Brigadier General in the Air Force Reserve.
  • Pre-War Experience: Stewart obtained a private pilot license in 1935 and a commercial license in 1938, often flying his own plane, a Stinson 105.
  • World War II Service: He was the first major Hollywood star to enlist in WWII, joining in March 1941. Despite early assignments in training and publicity, he pressured his commanders to transfer him to combat.
  • Combat Missions: As a Captain and later Major/Colonel, he flew 20 combat missions over Germany, including leading bombing raids on Berlin. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross with two Oak Leaf Clusters and the Croix de Guerre.
  • Post-War Career: He remained in the Air Force Reserve after the war and was promoted to Brigadier General in 1959. He even flew as an observer on a B-52 mission over Vietnam in 1966.
  • Final Honor: In 1985, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest award for a US civilian.
