Hackers heavily target streaming platforms and devices (especially if you are traveling)

We have been Traveling Several Weeks now and the latest was to visit a relative who had been in the Hospital in Portland. So, Netflix and Prime were working okay up until now. However, my wife just mentioned to me that the wifi network here at our hotel says it isn't secure which could be the problem. However, now I can't log into Netflix or Prime or Disney or Apple because of whatever is happening and someone in Ohio seems to be hacking all these systems and streaming logins so I cannot get into anything. However, my son is pretty good at this sort of thing so possibly he can figure out what's wrong tomorrow when he wakes up. I think we (everyone)  have to expect all kinds of craziness because if AIs doing bad things worldwide much like the whole internet became very dangerous in the early 1990s and early 2000s in various ways. So, Good Luck everyone in these crazy crazy times!

 begin quotes:

Hackers heavily target streaming platforms and devices. They use stolen logins to hijack accounts, inject malware via pirated streaming sites, and embed secret backdoor software into cheap, off-brand smart TV boxes.
The most prominent threats affecting users today include:
  • Account Takeovers & Credential Stuffing: Hackers test login combinations leaked from unrelated data breaches on platforms like Netflix or Disney+. Because many users reuse passwords, bad actors easily gain access to accounts.
  • Piracy Site Malware: Research shows that accessing pirated movies or shows online increases your chance of encountering malware by over 65%.
  • Compromised Hardware Backdoors: The FBI issued a security warning (Alert # I-031226-PSA) regarding budget Android TV boxes pre-installed with malware. These backdoors hijack your home network to route other criminals' internet traffic.
To protect your digital ecosystem, you can utilize a few concrete strategies:
  • Unique Passwords: Never use the same password for a streaming service that you use for your email or bank account.
  • App Safety: Avoid downloading "secret," unverified apps that promise free premium content. Stick exclusively to official app stores like the Google Play Store or the Amazon Appstore.
  • Device Updates: Regularly install software updates and security patches on your smart TVs and streaming sticks.
If you want, I can help you:
  • Review the security of your current streaming logins
  • Identify safe vs. risky devices on your home network
  • Advise you on the best methods to spot phishing attempts
Tell me what kind of streaming device you are currently using so we can check if it is included in any of the recent cybersecurity advisories.
