 begin quote
After the 1600s, Jamestown slowly disappeared as a town. In 1698, a big fire burned down the local prison and statehouse. The government decided to move the capital of Virginia to the nearby town of Middle Plantation (which was renamed Williamsburg) in 1699.
Jamestown became a quiet farming area and was no longer an active town by the mid-1700s. Later, during the American Civil War, Confederate soldiers built a fort there. In the late 1800s, groups began to save and restore the historic land.
Today, it is a famous historic park where scientists and historians still dig up old artifacts.
