I just saw a Northern Flicker from my Hot tub. he or she looked like these ones. However, usually they look different than this in California

IN California the ones with the red band on the back of their head is more normal for this area.

A male Northern Flicker (yellow-shafted) pauses on a fence post before hopping back down into the grasses. Instead of hammering on wood, these birds prefer to dig in the dirt to look for ants.
Ants are its main food, and the flicker digs in the dirt to find them. It uses its long barbed tongue to lap up the ants.” (All About Birds) "...

A rare visit to the mountain spring 💦💦💦, in front of the camera at least, by a female Yellow-shafted Northern Flicker. A large striking woodpecker. In general woodpeckers don't show up in front of the cameras very often. I think they have their own special isolated places that they favor. #birds #woodpecker

Do you like Northern Flickers? Cause we got a bunch of 'em! These 12 nestling flickers arrived from two separate nests that were discovered when their trees were cut down. It's a lot of hungry mouths to feed! If you're a woodpecker enthusiast, or just a bird love

This little Northern Flicker has a big appetite! Flickers are one of the few woodpeckers that spend much of their time feeding on the ground, eating ants, beetles, and other insects—and in rehabilitation, that means they can put away an impressive number of bugs. They’re also one of over 250 wild birds currently in our care! Baby season is at its peak, and this month alone we’ve spent more than $4,000 on insects to keep our songbird patients fed. The mealworms, waxworms, crickets, and other insects disappear almost as quickly as they arrive. If you’d like to help us keep up with all of these hungry mouths, please consider making a donation. Every dollar helps us feed patients like this little flicker and hundreds of other birds recovering in our care. Donation link in our bio. Thank you, friends 💓 #congressofthebirds #wildliferehab #bird #wildliferehab #northernflicker
