What is Hindu Kush?

It is a separate mountain range from the Himalayas I guess. I was watching about the Hindu Kush in a Movie and my wife asked where the Hindu Kush actually was. I couldn't fully answer this question so I looked it up. It wasn't exactly where I thought it might be.

The Hindu Kush is a major 500-mile (800-km) mountain system in South-Central Asia. It stretches primarily across Afghanistan (from its center to the northeast) and northern Pakistan (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province), with some ridges extending into Tajikistan.
The range acts as a geographic divider between Central Asia and the Indian subcontinent, separating the Amu Darya river valley to the north from the Indus River valley to the south. The highest peak in the Hindu Kush is Mount Tirich Mir (7,708 meters / 25,289 feet), which is located in the Chitral district of Pakistan near the Afghan border.

What is the difference between Hindu Kush and Himalayas?
AI Overview
The Hindu Kush and the Himalayas are two distinct but interconnected mountain systems in Central and South Asia. The Hindu Kush primarily stretches across Afghanistan and northwestern Pakistan. The Himalayas lie further southeast, sweeping across Northern India, Nepal, Bhutan, and Tibet.
While physically separate, both ranges belong to the massive geological complex known as the Hindu Kush Himalayan (HKH) region, often called the "Third Pole" due to its vast ice and snow reserves.
Here is how the two ranges differ:
Geographical Location and Extent
  • Hindu Kush: An 800-kilometer (500-mile) range located to the west and northwest of the Himalayas. It begins near the Pamir Mountains (where the borders of Afghanistan, Pakistan, and China meet) and stretches southwest through Afghanistan and into Pakistan
    .

  • Himalayas: A massive 3,500-kilometer (2,175-mile) long arc located further east, beginning just to the east of the Indus River in Pakistan and extending eastward through India, Nepal, and Bhutan, before ending near the edge of the Tibetan Plateau.
Elevation and Terrain
  • Hindu Kush: Its highest peak is Tirich Mir, which stands at 7,708 meters (25,289 feet). The range is characterized by sharp, jagged peaks, and its valleys often feature more arid, cold desert landscapes.
  • Himalayas: These are the highest mountains in the world. They host all fourteen of the Earth's "eight-thousanders" (peaks over 8,000 meters / 26,247 feet), most notably Mount Everest (8,848.86 meters). The terrain ranges from tropical foothills to glaciated, alpine zones.
Climate and Hydrology
  • Hindu Kush: Receives significantly less rainfall in its inner valleys compared to the eastern portions of the Himalayas, leading to distinct desert-like vegetation in certain lower elevations.
  • Himalayas: Intercepts monsoon winds, causing heavy rainfall, dense forests, and immense biological diversity in the southern foothills. They act as the primary water source for major river systems like the Ganges, Brahmaputra, and Yangtze.
Cultural Significance
  • Hindu Kush: Historically served as a critical gateway and geographical barrier between Central Asia, the Middle East, and the Indian subcontinent, housing historic trading and military routes like the famous Khyber Pass.
  • Himalayas: Separates the Indian subcontinent from the Tibetan Plateau. Culturally, they are deeply revered in South Asian religions and are home to diverse communities, including famous mountaineering groups like the Sherpa people.
