To the best of my ability I write about my experience of the Universe Past, Present and Future

AN EMP is one reason why you want wire controls to surfaces of a plane so you can still glide down and land if an EMP occurs

It's also why you want a gasoline or diesel vehicle so that you can stop it and put it into neutral likely if you need to to disengage the engine for any vehicle you are driving on the ground so you don't die.

However, in regard to computers this EMP would cremate literally all hard drives in computers around the world to the point where no magnetic memory would remain anywhere on any laptop of computers of any kind where that EMP occurred. So, the only thing left would be stuff on DVDs and CDs which are non-magnetic media because all magnetic media of any kind would fry above 10 feet underground.

So, likely the only computers still working would be somewhere like the Air Force has in Colorado Springs deep underground which was why it was built for this purpose at 7000 feet elevation in case of nuclear strikes or earthquakes or really bad tsunamis or a bad asteroid hit which devastates the world so some  semblance of civilization would remain through the military through all of this chaos if it actually happened or happens at some point in the future.

There is another thing that could cause similar damage which is a large enough solar flare and you can read about a bad one in 1959: It is called the Carrington Event:

begin quotes:

The Carrington Event of 1859 was the most intense geomagnetic storm in recorded history, triggered by a massive solar flare and coronal mass ejection that slammed into Earth.
What Happened
  • The Sighting: On September 1, 1859, English astronomers Richard C. Carrington and Richard Hodgson independently observed a blinding white-light flare erupting from a sunspot.
  • The Transit: A billion-ton cloud of magnetized plasma—a coronal mass ejection (CME)—raced toward Earth and completed the trip in a record-shattering 17.6 hours instead of the usual several days.
  • The Impact: When it hit Earth's magnetosphere, it induced massive electrical currents.
Effects on Earth
  • Global Auroras: Brilliant auroras lit up the night sky as far south as the Caribbean, Hawaii, and Cuba. The lights were so bright people could read newspapers by their glow.
  • Telegraph Chaos: Electrical surges flooded global telegraph networks. Operators received shocks, telegraph paper caught fire, and some machines continued to send and receive messages even with their batteries disconnected.
