how do mitochondria act as power engines or power stations in the body

 begin quotes:

Mitochondria are tiny parts inside your cells that act as power stations. They take food and oxygen and turn them into chemical energy called ATP. This energy fuels every action in your body, from moving your muscles to beating your heart.
How Mitochondria Make Energy
  • Take in fuel: They use sugars and fats from the food you eat.
  • Bring in oxygen: They use the oxygen you breathe in from the air.
  • Run a chemical factory: They pass tiny parts called electrons through a chain of proteins.
  • Build ATP: This process pumps out energy packages known as ATP.
  • Power the cell: The cell uses ATP like a battery to do its daily work.
Why They Are Like Power Plants
  • They change fuel types: Just like a plant burns coal or gas to make electricity, mitochondria burn food and oxygen to make cellular power.
  • They are busy in hard-working cells: Heart and muscle cells have thousands of mitochondria because they need a lot of energy.
  • They create waste: They make heat and waste gases, just like a real power station.

If people remember anything from junior high biology, it’s that mitochondria are the cell’s power stations. Yet these rod-shaped organelles take on other roles as well. How cells balance these competing priorities when nutrients are in short supply has been unclear—until now.

Jul 22, 2025 — Scientists often call mitochondria the powerhouses of the cell, because they produce about 90% of the energy that cells need to function.
