I can see why gyirong port is important to businesses because the most direct route from Kathmandu to Lhasa is 20,000 feet in elevation (the highest mountain pass on that route traveled)

 Because of this when my friend Vincent went over that pass into Tibet to visit Lhasa around 1985 he came upon a whole bus of dead people who had likely died of exposure when the bus broke down at 20,000 feet elevation.

The border crossing at Gyirong Port sits at an elevation of approximately 1,800 to 1,850 meters (5,900 to 6,070 feet) above sea level. 

Unlike many high-altitude Himalayan crossings, this route follows the deep Gyirong Valley along the Trishuli River rather than traversing a high mountain summit pass.
