Ocean of Wisdom

 The Dalai Lama is often referred to as "The Ocean of Wisdom" so it makes sense to me that Geshela (which is an endearing name for Geshe Lobsang Gyatso) would want his ashes in the Ocean in Honor of his Connection to the Dalai Lama. If you put ashes far enough out to sea (I think it might be 100 yards) or the length of a football field or something it is legal to do this by the way.

Geshela was with the Dalai Lama when he escaped from Lhasa to India where many died along the way during this escape. He said all he had were men's leather Dress shoes as they boarded traditional  Kowa (skin covered frames sort of like larger versions of Alaskan skin covered Kayaks used by traditional native Americans there too.

So, it makes complete sense to me why Geshela would choose to have his ashes put into the ocean there somewhere in or near Pacific Grove, California.
