The Industrial Revolution and its consequences: The closest comparison that I can think of is the Industrial revolution in thinking about the Singularity

The Industrial Revolution and its consequences brought massive shifts to human life, driven by key changes like mechanization, urbanization, and new social classes. While it boosted global wealth and tech growth, it also caused severe social and environmental harm.
Economic and Technological Growth
  • Mass production: Machines replaced hand tools, making goods cheaper and easier to buy.
  • New power sources: Coal and steam engines—like James Watt's engine—powered factories, trains, and steamships.
  • Better travel: Canals, roads, and railways cut travel time and connected distant markets.
Social and Living Changes
  • City growth: Millions moved from farms to crowded industrial cities like Manchester in search of work.
  • Harsh labor: Early factories featured long hours, low pay, and dangerous conditions for men, women, and children.
  • New classes: Society shifted from land lords and peasants to factory owners (bourgeoisie) and wage workers (proletariat), alongside a growing middle class.
Environmental and Long-Term Impacts
  • Pollution: Factories and coal use skyrocketed carbon emissions and warmed the planet.
  • Health struggles: Overcrowded slums led to poor sanitation and the spread of diseases like cholera.
  • Lasting debate: Technological growth raised living standards for many, but critics and social movements also argued it disrupted human autonomy and nature.
If you'd like, we can explore:
  • Specific inventions like the steam engine or water frame
  • The rise of labor unions and worker rights
  • The environmental history of carbon emissions
