What Are ancient Tibetan Texts written on?

begin quote
Using Paper | Project Himalayan Art
Tibetan texts are traditionally written on durable, thick, handmade paper crafted from local plant fibers, such as the Himalayan Daphne shrub, paper mulberry, and poisonous root fibers (Stellera). This unique paper helped preserve sacred Buddhist pecha (loose-leaf folio texts) for centuries.
Materials and Plant Sources
  • Himalayan Daphne: inner bark used for tough, fibrous sheets.
  • Stellera root (Rechagpa): poisonous properties naturally deter insects and mice.
  • Paper Mulberry: utilized heavily in eastern regional production.
Production and Inks
  • Smoothing process: dried sheets were often rubbed with barley powder to create a flat writing surface.
  • Specialized coatings: glossy blue-black luxury papers incorporated ingredients like yak brain and hide glue.
  • Inks: standard text used soot-based ink, while illuminated manuscripts featured gold, silver, turquoise, and coral.
