Most of the chair lifts in the 50s were like this

I remember these a lot but people were just more aware of how to stay alive back then. Now people are babied so much you wonder if they could actually survive in the 1950s at all?

The idea was then that if you didn't feel safe on a chair lift you shouldn't ride one. But, also remember then that we didn't have skis that released your  boots from your downhill skis either in emergencies. So, if you crashed you broke your ankle or leg almost every time too if you fell wrong.

Is It Safe? Thanks To “The Arm” It Is Now

You’ve likely met “the arm” before. It’s the classic mom move they’ve all done to us when a situation seems unsafe. If she’s ever braked slightly quicker than usual in traffic you’ve felt it shoot across your chest to hold you back. “The arm” doesn’t care if there’s seatbelts or not.

This mom broke out “the arm” to make this chairlift safe for her daughter and we respect it. Nowadays chair lifts don’t always come with seatbelts so this isn’t that strange even today.
