The 1959 Oval window 36 horsepower VW Bug

A friend had one of these and we used to drive to Mt. Shasta and Yosemite for Rock climbing in it. It was the opposite of fast but got incredible gas mileage. I can't remember whether this year had the floor switch that allowed you to go on reserve (no gas gauge) just the reserve switch like a motorcycle. There was also one year in the 1950s or more where they had he unusual gas pedal too. They sort of had this little roller thing on the end of your gas pedal shaft. I could never figure out whether this was a good idea or not.

Having a car with less horsepower than most motorcycles I'm not sure was a great idea either. But, if you wanted good gas mileage in a very reliable car this was also it.

But, almost all VW Bugs (if not all of them) you had to faithfully adjust the valves religiously every 3000 miles or sooner if you didn't want to break a valve and possibly loose an engine. This was the single most important thing to know about VW Bugs other than the fact that it had maybe the most difficult clutch to get used to when shifting in any car I have ever driven in my life. But, if you mastered the clutch without burning it out you were in heaven riding anywhere in one of these with great mileage.
