Resident Alien is an American science fiction mystery comedy-drama television series, based on the comic book of the same name by Peter Hogan and Steve Parkhouse, that premiered on January 27, 2021 on Syfy. In March 2021, the series was renewed for a second season.[2]

Premise[edit]

After crash-landing on Earth, an alien sent to wipe out humanity kills and takes on the identity of a vacationing pathology physician. He is asked to do an autopsy on the town's doctor, who died of unknown circumstances. He wrestles with the moral dilemma of his secret mission, while also dealing with a 9-year-old boy who can see him as an alien.[3]

Cast and characters[edit]

Main[edit]

  • Alan Tudyk as “Dr. Harry Vanderspeigle”, an alien with an unpronounceable birth name who crash-landed on earth, killed the real Dr. Vanderspeigle, and assumed his identity. He is fascinated by humans and has learned how to speak English, as well as how to hide as a medical examiner, from watching reruns of Law & Order. Although he attempts to blend in to human civilization, he consistently stands out due to his misunderstandings of social cues. As the series progresses, he learns more about human behavior and involuntarily develops human emotions while in disguise. Tudyk also plays the real Dr. Vanderspeigle in flashbacks through the series.
  • Sara Tomko as Asta Twelvetrees, the assistant to the town doctor and a member of the Ute Native American tribe. In high school, Asta found herself trapped in an abusive relationship with Jimmy, which caused her to give daughter Jay up for adoption.
  • Corey Reynolds as Mike Thompson, the town's local sheriff. Preferring people to call him Big Black, the Sheriff masks his insecurities by trying to remain in constant control of every situation. His father mentioned that his career in Washington, D.C. ended as a result of the death of a U.S. Senator.
  • Alice Wetterlund as D'arcy Bloom, the town’s bar owner, and Asta's best friend. After suffering an accident at the Olympics, D'Arcy returned to her hometown and now spends her days tending the bar and making questionable life choices.
  • Levi Fiehler as Ben Hawthorne, the town's young mayor. Ben is charming but child-like, and his wife, Kate, plays the more dominant role in their relationship.
  • Judah Prehn as Max Hawthorne, the mayor’s son and the only Patience resident who can see Harry's true form. He can also see the "green glow" emitted by alien technology. Harry repeatedly plots to kill him or get him to move away, but he eventually warms up to the boy, believing he can help him in his mission.

Recurring[edit]

  • Elizabeth Bowen as Deputy Sheriff Liv Baker. Although the Sheriff takes credit for everything, Liv does all the work.
  • Ben Cotton as Jimmy, Asta's abusive ex-husband.
  • Meredith Garretson as Kate Hawthorne, the mayor's wife, who works as a schoolteacher.
  • Gracelyn Awad Rinke as Sahar, Max Hawthorne's friend and classmate. An adventurous young girl and a devout Muslim, Sahar is the only other person in town who believes Max's claim that Harry is an alien.
  • Kaylayla Raine as Jay, a surly teenage girl who works part-time for the doctor. She discovers that coworker Asta is her biological mother.
  • Deborah Finkel as Abigail Hodges, the wife of Dr. Sam Hodges, and his murderer.
  • Jenna Lamia as Judy Cooper, who works at the bowling alley. Judy is the town tramp who constantly trades barbs with D'Arcy.
  • Gary Farmer as Dan Twelvetrees, Asta's father, who owns the town's diner.
  • Mandell Maughan as Lisa Casper, a sociopathic woman who works for General McCallister. She has no problem killing anyone she encounters and looks forward to her next kill, enjoying doing so.
  • Alex Barima as Lieutenant David Logan, who works for General McCallister. After piecing together clues about Harry's crash landing, General McCallister recruits him to find the alien before her superiors. He is unfortunately partnered with Lisa Casper and is tormented by her.
  • Alvin Sanders as Lewis Thompson, the sheriff's ailing father.
  • Elvy as Isabelle, the real Harry's estranged wife and a British artist who won her husband over at a New York City art exhibition.
  • Linda Hamilton as General McCallister, a high-ranking U.S. military officer. During her childhood, McCallister saw a spacecraft firsthand, and she has spent her life seeking more proof that aliens exist.

Guest stars[edit]

  • Nathan Fillion as an octopus in a restaurant tank, with whom Harry has a conversation. Their conversation suggests that Harry's species and octopuses are closely related. Fillion previously co-stared with Tudyk in the 2003 series Firefly and its concluding film Serenity.
  • Terry O'Quinn as Peter Bach, an "alien experiencer". someone who came into contact with extraterrestrials and does podcasts and shows about it. He can see Harry's real form as well.
  • Giorgio A. Tsoukalos as himself. Harry hides in his room and they have a meaningful conversation about ancient aliens.

Now stranded, he must blend in by assuming human form and the identity of a doctor, Harry Vanderspeigle. Harry is asked to examine the body of Sam, the town doctor, who recently died, and his odd behavior is off-putting but accepted. He even takes on the doctor's job with help from his assistant Asta, but he learns his true identity can be seen by Max, Mayor Hawthorne's young son. After drinking heavily in order to fit in, Harry attempts unsuccessfully to kill Max. After originally attributing Sam's death to suicide, Harry (after re-examing his body at the funeral) now believes that he had been poisoned, having unsuccessfully attempted a tracheotomy on himself to save his life.
