For me at least this Zeitgeist started in 1989 in Kahului Hawaii with Flame a Time Traveling evolved Octopus whose species began in California at the Monterey Bay Aquarium there. Over time, people found that like Porpoises used by the military that Octopi were the most intelligent non-vertibrates in the ocean and the most intelligent thing that actually breathed water during this century and the coming centuries. And having something this intelligent that you could bribe with food (just like porpoises and sea lions) became a way to integrate over time Octopi thus trained with robotic devices that humans send in the near and the far future to other planets for exploration and colonization, especially on water planets where Octopi would be useful to do this. Also, in water since basically water is a Zero Gravity situation basically, as long as you oxygenate the water that octopi can space travel in they would be relatively comfortable traveling through space as long as they are fed and have companions of either humans or their own kind or likely both or robotic assist sentients for colonization and exploration of other planets. This is how the evolution that Flame came from when he became a Time traveling Guard for the Galactic Time Guard and rescued most of the survivors of the Maldek planet explosion caused by a nuclear war on Maldek about 65 million years ago when a piece of the then destroyed planet came to earth and killed off all the larger dinosaur species which allowed humanoid kind to colonize earth after all the bigger dinosaurs strangled and froze to death in the following few years of nuclear winter from the collision of a piece of the Asteroid belt planet when it blew up from nukes over several months or years time then 65 million years ago.
After I talked with Flame I eventually put what I had written (most of it) online at my first blog in 1999.
Interestingly enough, Galaxy Quest with an Octopi Species on it shows up in that movie also in 1999.
Ever since then more and more people became aware of just how very very intelligent octopi are here on earth.

So, resident Alien is another show on the SYFY channel that also recognizes just how very very intelligent the Octopus species is too and the alien calls the octopus in the Chinese Restaurant in one episode his "Cousin". And like an octopus the alien appears to be able to "Grow a new leg" when one is gone.
