SHASTA-TRINITY NATIONAL FOREST, Calif. – A wildfire is burning in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest that is highly visible from both Highway 5 and Highway 97.

According to a forest spokesperson the Lava Fire is 3.5 acres in size.

It is one of four confirmed fires that started from recent lightning incidents. The other three fires in the forest were stopped at 1/10th of an acre of less.

The Lava Fire is burning northwest of Weed in rough, rocky terrain. Specifically it is 3.5 miles north of Weed and 4.5 miles southeast of Lake Shastina.

The Lava Fire is well-staffed, according to a spokesperson. There are no structures in the area and no evacuations. The fire is burning in the Mt. Shasta Management Unit in 2nd growth timber and brush.

Authorities confirmed on Saturday morning that the fire is not burning in the old growth forest near the Black Lava Trail.

The other lightning fires were the Zot Fire northwest of Mt. Eddy; the Eddy Fire southeast of Weed; and the Yellow Fire which is north of Highway 97 near Military Pass Road. All of these lightning-caused fires in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest have been contained, except for the Lava Fire.
