Emily the Criminal(2022) Netflix
I was listening to Aubrey Plaza talk to Seth Meyers about this movie that I think she financed herself because she thought it was an important movie to make so people would better understand this problem of student loan debt. It's about a young woman who doesn't finish her art degree because of problems and then still owes 60,000 dollars in student loans and finds herself turning to non-violent crime as a way of staying financially afloat. It is a problem that many young people have now when they find themselves in difficulty and cannot pay off their student loans and stay financially afloat. This is one of the many reasons why Biden wanted to forgive student debt for people like this who might have no other choice but to turn to crime to try to pay off their student loans when things go awry for them in real life.
So, if you want to understand better what is happening to many young people with too much student debt that they cannot live with or pay off and survive, this is one of them. This also shows the Seedier side of Los Angeles beyond all the glitz and glamour of Hollywood. I think Aubrey Plaza might have financed this movie herself.
One of the more interesting things about student loan debt is that both Barach Obama and Michelle Obama were NOT able to pay off their student Loan debts from becoming Lawyers until their mid 40s!
In my own life I told my son my wife and I would pay off his student loan debt ONLY if he actually graduated with a Bachelor's degree which he did and we followed through too.
However, for poorer families this never happens unless the Government forgives the debt.
No,
Emily The Criminal is not based on the true story of one particular
individual as Emily Benetto is a purely fictional creation. However,
the film does take inspiration from the real-life experiences of its
writer and director, John Patton Ford, as well as the struggles that
face many people in 21st-century America.Dec 13, 2022

Just finished #EmilytheCriminal on Netflix. It's a tight, atmospheric little thriller with some biting social commentary. Kinda lightweight, but definitely got the job done.
I respect Theo Rossi's commitment to accent work. And Aubrey Plaza...why isn't she in everything yet???
Beginning to suspect that #TheWhiteLotus buzz may help Aubrey Plaza, who’s having a moment in her career. She could land in the SAG lineup for work in #EmilytheCriminal, perhaps mimicking Sarah Silverman’s surprise nod for “I Smile Back” (2015).
